If you haven’t already heard, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has moved up a weight class since winning the featherweight title. Not only that, but he received an immediate shot at the champion, Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 on March 5.

Breaking News:

Rafael Dos Anjos has broken his ankle and cannot participate in UFC 196.
Conor McGregor is still fighting. His new opponent, Nate Diaz, has been confirmed.

Nate Diaz

Nate Diaz made his debut in the Ultimate Fighter 5 series, featuring lightweights at the time. He now fights in the welterweight class and holds a professional record of 19-10-0.

The original title fight for UFC 196 was Werdum vs Velasquez, but do to injuries, that specific title fight was also canceled.

McGregor promises that he will become the third multi-divional world champion in UFC history, but he’s also making one thing clear — the lightweight division needs him, not the other way around.

With back to back championship fights in two weight classes, Conor McGregor isn’t wasting any time in achieving his multi-title goals. Rafael dos Anjos better bring his A-game, because McGregor sounds confident.

Ups and Downs

Contrary to what you might have expected, McGregor (19-2) has opened a plus-120 betting underdog to dos Anjos (25-7), who opened a minus-150 favorite, even after Mcgregor’s brutal 13 second KO over Jose Aldo in UFC 194. (lines via MMAOddsBreaker.com)

“I originally opened the [McGregor] line on Dec. 20 and early action was on McGregor,” Kalikas told ESPN.com. “The line has since settled at minus-130 for Dos Anjos.

McGregor has momentum, however, Dos Anjos is riding a five fight win streak, including a dominant five round performance with Anthony “showtime” Pettis, and impressive victories over Benson Henderson and Donald Cerrone.

UFC 196: Holly Holm vs. Miesha Tate

Holly Holm shocked the world and became an overnight sensation with her underdog knockout against Ronda Rousey in UFC 193.  The odds in UFC 193 were 8-1 against underdog Holm, and now she is the favorited to win in her fight against #1 contender Miesha Tate.

Miesha Tate is currently ranked No. 2 in UFC’s official rankings, in-part due to her four-fight win streak, which includes victories over former title challengers, Sara McMann and Liz Carmouche.
Tate gave her reasoning why this is a great matchup, to address the demand of the UFC fanbase for a Rousey vs Holm rematch:

“I am the No. 1 contender. I’ve been the No. 1 contender and I worked my ass off to get to be the No. 1 contender. The thing is she’s [Ronda Rousey] going to be out too long and I’m ready to go and I think Holly’s ready to go so let’s set it up in the mean time. When Ronda comes back she’ll have a quality champion to face.”

Holm gave her thoughts on a bout with Tate to FOX Sports when she was in Las Vegas for UFC 194 back in December:

Miesha Tate’s a whole different fight than Ronda. Every fighter’s different. I feel she has a pretty well-rounded game, she’s kind of one of those scrappy fighters from any position.”

Miesha Tate is known for her extensive knowledge of ground-based arts including wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and submission defense. In 2011 Tate won the Strikeforce Bantamweight Championship by becoming the first woman to ever submit Marloes Coenen in an MMA bout. In UFC 183, Tate out-grappled Olympic wrestling medalist Sara McMann for the win. Following her first bout with champion Ronda Rousey in 2012, Rousey described Tate as “much more savvy on the ground than I anticipated.”
Rousey is expected to challenge the winner of Holm vs. Tate when she’s healed up and finished with whatever appearances/advertisements she has promised her time to.
